The Sticks

History of the vegetable garden

When we moved into the Sticks in 1988 there was a small patch of ground we decided was ideal for a vegetable garden. The problem was that building rubble from the renovation of the house had been tipped all over it by the previous owners.

The pictures below are scanned from prints and at very low resolution because they were made for a very early website when images needed to be small to load, but there are two you may be able to make out: the before and after with the first showing us clearing the rubble and the second after an extra layer of top soil have been laid. We used the garden in this configuration for a few years but it was difficult to maintain, especially on a slope so we decided to edge the beds with wooden planks and make permanent gravel paths.

Somewhere I may still have the negatives for these photos. If I find them I will rescan and improve increase the resolution and size. In the meantime they are my website equivalent of black and white.
