It had long been my ambition to travel to South America, and in particular Peru and the Galapagos Islands. Like everyone else I wanted to see the giant tortoises.

For the second stage of our South American tour we travelled from Lima, Peru to Quito, Ecuador. We arrived at the old airport, tightly squeezed between the houses. I still have the image of colourful clothes flapping on washing lines at what appeared to be only a few metres from the aircraft wings.
After a day sightseeing in Quito we flew out to the Galapagos to begin our week long cruise.

After one night in Quito we transferred to the airport for our flight to the Galapgos Islands. We had to leave most of our luggage behind at the hotel in Quito and we had transfered what we would need for our one week long cruise round the islands into one bag. At the airport we were given strict instructions what were were and were not allowed to take and told about the serious consequences of breaking the rules. Under no circumstances were we to take any fruit.

We arrived in Quito as the locals were celebrating the decision to build a new airport. Having just arrived and seen how close to many homes the old airport was as we touched down with gardens and washing lines on both sides I could understand their joy, but the one overwhelming memory I have of my brief time in Quito was the polution. Exhaust fumes created a yellow smog and I found it seriously unpleasant to breathe and it was only a matter of minutes before I developed a headache.

We travelled by train from Cuzco down to Agua Callientes and then completed our journey to Machu Pichu by bus, up the winding track. When the train left Cuzco it moved slowly backwards and forwards climbing out of the time before beginning its long slow descent towards Agua Calientes. The track wended its way like an alley between the houses. At some points the train was so close to the neighbouring houses it seemed as though an arm streched out of the window would be enough to touch them.

Our guide was very keen for us to see the Sacred Valley and the Inca sites. We saw and learned a lot on our whole day tour, but in the meantime here are some shots from our video.
