HOUSE AND GARDEN IN 1988

This page shows the state of our garden when we first moved in in 1988.
Old house This picture shows the bare house and the vast expanse of characterless tarmac drive. The drive gradually disintegrated and weeds began to grow up through it.
Holly tree before When we first moved in in June 1988 the front garden was little more than a large expanse of unkept grass, an overgrown holly tree and an equally over grown rhododendron bush. The first thing we did was to try and tame the grass. After a few months of constant moving it began to approach something resembling a lawn. Unfortunately it took so long to keep it mown that we eventually decided on a mixed texture approach keeping the grass adjacent to the drive way short and allowing that on the rather steep slope to grow longer - but never back to the original tangled mess.
Starting the "good life" is hard work and as this picture shows the vegetable plot had been left like a builders yard by the previous occupants. It took several week ends of hard work by many members of the family plus two lorry loads of soil to transform the wilderness into the plot shown below.
