Louise started 2005 with a guest appearance for Ipswich Harriers
while we were on holiday in Suffolk. Despite having a heavy cold and
barking cough she managed to hold her own in the junior race, an
event for which she was, strictly two years too young. She was also
much smaller than most of the other competitors as you can see below
(left) although this didn't seem to bother her (see below right)

After starting the year leading the Burslem
schools cross country championship after two races, Louise
eventually finished overal third after a disappointing run on
a very short, flat course. Normally she would have been able
to drop her worst result but as a number had cancelled
because of bad weather all counted. Nevertheless she was
selected for the City championships where despite a
disastrous start and coming from behind she finished seventh
and attracted the attention of a few of athletics clubs.
After trying out two clubs for a few weeks she finally
decided to join Staffordshire Moorlands. She has
thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the club and on 10th
December the club juniors (pictured right) celebrated their
best ever results in the North Staffordshire Cross Country
League.
Louise finished overal 2nd in the U-11 Girls Individual
and the U-11 girls team (Lucie 2nd from left second row,
Louise 2nd from left front row, Lauren (next to Louise and
Anonia right most front row) also finished 2nd behind
Macclesfield. The full results are available on the league web
site

The final of four races in the league was
over a very hilly course as you can see from the picture on
the right. All the Staffs Moorlands kids did extremely well
and most were awarded trophies either as individuals or teams
or both, much to the delight of Phil their coach who can be
seem encouraging the U-11 boys and U-13 girls up the hill.

Louise and the U-11 girls' success in the North Staffs league
followed a very successful trip to Uttoxeter earlier in the
season. The Uttoxeter is the fist race of the season. It
attracts clubs from a wide area across the midlands and is
traditionally seen as tough competion. The race is sponsored
by Bourne Sports and the week before the
race while buying kit from Mr. Bourne, Louise told him she
was in the race and after doing well in nearly all her other
races was hopeful. He said he didn't think she'd win a medal
in the Uttoxeter but hoped he was wrong and if he was she
should go back and tell him and he'd have some goodies for
her. Louise finished the 1.75 mile race in 11 minutes and 45
seconds and in third place. Her team mate Lucie finished 11th
in 12:26 and Antonia 23rd in 13:10. Overall the team also
finished third. Louise went back to see Mr. Bourne and true
to his word he provided her with a goodie bag. Louise willl
never forget this type of encouragement and Mr Bourne has got
himself a customer for life!!! |

Pictures from the Uttoxeter race on 18th September. By the
time Louise received her medal the borrowed vest was once
again out on the course - she now has her own.
After being trained by Mum for 4 or 5 years, Louise is now
too good for her and prefers to train with the club and her
mates. However, for old times sake and to help with endurance
she still runs with Mum on Sunday afternoons.

During the Summer term Louise also ran in the Stoke on
Trent City Primary Schools Athletics Championships in U-10s
where she became skipping champion winning herself a gold
medal (picture bottom right). She was disappointed not to be
in the 60m sprint having been knocked out in the Burslem
games where she failed to retain her Burslem title. However,
having trained at the track all summer she was particularly
disappointed not to have been selected to represent the
school in the 800m. She was entered into the skipping
instead. For medals this was probably a good idea because
over 800m Lucie (who goes to a rival school) would be bound
to beat her. A surprise success was a 2nd place in the
Burslem long jump. Unfortunately there are no city
chanpionships for U10s in field events so we will have to
wait until next year to see if she has any future as a
jumper.
